Joseph & Joseph Architects was selected by the University of Kentucky and its College of Ag for programming and architectural services to design a new distillery and barrel house campus, which includes the James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits Still Building and the Independent Stave Company Maturation Building. Incorporating a state of the art TEAL classroom and lab space, this project will be the only distillery operating on a college campus in the country and navigates the complex overlap of operations with the educational needs of the students and faculty.

The design uses regional vernacular and the rich history of the bourbon industry in both form and materials to negotiate the multiple building scales found on and around the site as well as to craft a distinct identity for this highly unique campus program. Special attention is paid to the landscaped connection between the buildings and the building forms were articulated to describe the function within.
